Sarah "Sally" "Sallie" Church Greer died on May 1, 1860 in Shulls Mills, North Carolina at 71 years of age. She was born c. 1789 in . We are unaware of information about Sarah's immediate family.

In 1805, when she was 16 years old, on March 4th, Thomas Jefferson was inaugurated as President of the United States for the second time. He won 72.8% of the popular vote.

In 1813, she was 24 years old when on January 28th, Pride and Prejudice, written by Jane Austen, was published anonymously in London. None of her books carried her name - her first novel, Sense and Sensibility, named the author as "By a Lady". Pride and Prejudice named the author as "By the Author of Sense and Sensibility."

In 1844, at the age of 55 years old, Sarah was alive when on July 3rd, the last known pair of great auk were killed in Iceland. A flightless bird, the average auk was about 33 inches tall and weighed about 11 pounds with a black back and white belly. They were most often found along the coast of Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Canada Great Britain, Ireland - and sometimes as far south as Spain.

In 1859, at the age of 70 years old, Sarah was alive when from August 28th through September 2nd, the largest solar storm recorded - the solar storm of 1859 - occurred. The Northern lights were seen as far south as Cuba and it knocked out telegraph communications.

In 1860, in the year of Sarah "Sally" "Sallie" Church Greer's passing, on December 20th, South Carolina seceded from the United States - the first state to do so. At the time, there were about 4 million people enslaved in the American South.
