In 1800, he was 68 years old when the federal government moved from Philadelphia to Washington D.C. The site of the new capital had been chosen by President George Washington several years earlier and he appointed Pierre (Peter) Charles L'Enfant to lay out a plan for the new city.

In 1803, Simeon was 71 years old when the first public library in the United States - free to everyone - opened in Salisbury, Connecticut. Damage to books was most often caused by "greasing" - candle wax dripping onto the books. Candles were the only source of light in the evenings.

In 1810, in the year of Simeon Jones's passing, on November 17th, the Anglo-Swedish War (1810–12) began. Sweden declared war on the United Kingdom. While no hostilities occurred, France had demanded that Sweden declare the war and for economic reasons, Sweden complied. Two years later, France occupied Swedish Territory and Sweden sought peace with Great Britain.
