Timeline

1826 - In the year that Susan Berry was born, on July 4th, former US Presidents Thomas Jefferson and John Adams both died. It was the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. Jefferson died a few hours before Adams. Adams, unaware of Jefferson's death - who was both a friend and a rival - said as he was dying ""Thomas Jefferson survives."

1838 - When she was just 12 years old, on May 26th, the Native American Cherokee Nation was forced to march the Trail of Tears - relocating them to west of the Mississippi. When gold was discovered in Georgia in 1828, settlers wanted the Cherokee land. 16,543 natives were forced to march - it is estimated that 2,000 to 6,000 died along the way.

1851 - By the time she was 25 years old, on May 15th, the first of many Australian gold rushes was publicized. Because the California Gold Rush had caused many Australians to emigrate to California, Australia decided that the gold found in Australia should be publicized, rather than suppressing the news as earlier finds had been.

1890 - At the age of 64 years old, Susan was alive when on July 3rd, Idaho became the 43rd state in the United States. On July 10th, Wyoming became the 44th state.

1897 - In the year of Susan Berry's passing, on September 21st, editor and publisher Francis P. Church responded to a letter to the editor from Virginia O'Hanlon, 8 years old. Virginia's father had told her that "If you see it in The Sun, it's so." So she wrote to the Sun, asking if there was a Santa Claus. Church responded with the now famous editorial "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus".
