In 1806, on May 30th, Andrew Jackson killed Charles Dickinson in a duel. Dickinson accused Jackson of cheating on a bet, then insulted his wife Rachel - accusing her of bigamy. Although Dickinson had the first shot - and hit Jackson in the chest, near his heart - Jackson shot (maybe twice, which would have been illegal) and killed Dickinson. Although it is thought that Jackson fought anywhere from 5 to 100 duels (he had a bad temper), he won a run for President in 1829.

In 1883, on July 4th, the first rodeo in the world was held in Pecos, Texas - according to its citizens. In the towns of Prescott and Payson Arizona, the same claim is made. All of these were gatherings of local cowboys, showing off their skills - no matter who was first.

In 1898, magnate and philanthropist John D. Rockefeller's Standard Oil Company controlled 84% of the oil and pipelines in the United States. Rockefeller grew Standard Oil through the merger of several other small oil companies throughout the U.S., creating a monopoly.

In 1907, the showman Florenz Ziegfeld introduced his Ziegfeld Follies. Ziegfeld was inspired by the Folies Bergère of Paris and the show was a step up from the then current vaudeville shows. The top entertainers of the time played in the Follies but the stars were the Ziegfeld girls - beautiful chorus girls in elaborate costumes. For almost a quarter of a century, the Ziegfeld follies were the toast of Broadway.

In 1917, in the year of Sydney John Lennard's passing, Russian government offices were seized and the Romanov's Winter Palace was stormed in the Russian February and October Revolutions. The February revolution resulted in the abdication of Tsar Nicholas and a coalition of the Parliament and workers parties taking control of the government. The October revolution resulted in Lenin and the Bolsheviks taking complete control.
