In 1830, in the year that Thomas Allen Cline was born, on May 28th, the US Congress passed the Indian Removal Act. The Act authorized the President to negotiate with Native Americans in the southern region of the US, exchanging their ancestral lands for federal territory west of the Mississippi River. Tens of thousands of Native Americans were forced to move - and march - west.

In 1863, in January, British scientist John Tyndall proved the greenhouse effect - which had been widely theorized, but not proven, by scientists.

In 1915, The Birth of a Nation opened in February. A silent film, it was the most ambitious film to date and is considered a classic. Three hours long, it starred Lillian Gish and was directed by D. W. Griffith. The movie was based on the book The Clansman and told the story of two families (one pro-Union and one pro-Confederate) and their relationship during the Civil War and Reconstruction. The KKK was shown as "a heroic force".

In 1934, on July 22nd, gangster John Dillinger was killed in Chicago. His gang had robbed banks and police stations, among other charges, and he was being hunted by J. Edgar Hoover, head of the FBI - although many in the public saw him as a "Robin Hood". A madam from a brothel in which he was hiding became an informer for the FBI and, after a shootout with FBI agents, Dillinger was shot and died.

In 1963, the British Secretary of War, 46 year old John Profumo ,was forced to resign when he lied about an affair with 19 year old Christine Keeler. Keeler was also involved with the Soviet naval attaché and charges of espionage were feared. No proof of spying was ever found.
