Timeline

1823 - In the year that Thomas Blake was born, on April 13th, Franz Liszt - who was 11 - gave a concert in Austria. After the concert, he was personally congratulated by Ludwig van Beethoven.

1825 - At the age of just 2 years old, Thomas was alive when on October 26th, the Erie Canal opened. Construction had begun in 1817 and the completion of the canal provided passage from Albany New York to Buffalo New York and Lake Erie. Previously, pack animals had to be used to transport goods - there were no railroads - and the canal allowed goods to be shipped relatively easily and quickly.

1832 - When he was only 9 years old, on August 2nd, the Bad Axe Massacre ended the last major Native American rebellion east of the Mississippi River. The Massacre was the last battle of the war between white settlers and militia in Illinois and Michigan Territory and the Sauk and Fox tribes. 400 - 500 of the Native American warriors were killed outright. Some escaped but were soon killed by Sioux, who were working with the US soldiers.

1842 - By the time he was 19 years old, in January, William E. Clarke - a medical student at Berkshire Medical College - became the first person to use an inhaled anesthetic. He administered the anesthetic to pull a tooth.

1863 - In the year of Thomas Blake's passing, on October 3rd, during the middle of the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln created a national Thanksgiving day. Thanksgiving was to be celebrated on the final Thursday of November in 1863. In the U.S., Thanksgiving has been celebrated in November ever since.
