Timeline

1862 - In the year that Thomas Collins was born, on August 17th, the Dakota War of 1862 began in Minnesota. Four Lakota Sioux - while hunting - killed five settlers near the Minnesota River. That evening, elders of the tribe decided to attack more settlements with the goal of driving out those who had settled the area. By the end of the year, 1000 Lakota had been jailed.

1873 - At the age of just 11 years old, Thomas was alive when on September 18th, the New York stock market crash - due to the failure of a number of banks - began the Panic of 1873. After the boom following the Civil War, the Coinage Act of 1873 and other factors led to the market crash. Thus began the "Long Depression" - also called the "Great Depression" until the 1930's.

1876 - He was only 14 years old when on May 1st, Queen Victoria added the title Empress of India, a title held by British monarchs until 1948 - when India gained independence from the United Kingdom.

1892 - By the time he was 30 years old, on January 1st, Ellis Island opened to process immigrants. 700 passed through on the first day - in the first year, 450,000 were processed. The processing center was originally a 3 story wooden building - with outbuildings - that burned down a few years later.

1946 - In the year of Thomas Collins's passing, pediatrician Dr. Benjamin Spock's book "The Common Sense Book of Baby and Child Care" was published. It sold half a million copies in the first six months. Aside from the Bible, it became the best selling book of the 20th century. A generation of Baby Boomers were raised by the advice of Dr. Spock.
