I was saddened to learn of the death of Tom Grakowsky. I knew him from high school (Manchester High School, Manchester CT). He was in my biology class 1973-74 and in my Western Civ class 1975-76. Tom was a smart guy, interested in learning. One day in 10th grade I was in front of the class, giving a report about the possibility of alien life elsewhere in our solar system and galaxy. All the kids were listening with greater interest than they usually did in class but I noticed Tom Grakowsky appearing transfixed with fascination. He impressed me later, during our senior year. Mr Glaeser's western civ class was tough. Some of the smartest guys in our class ('76), like J. Dodge, M. Simon and D. Beaulieu, couldn't handle it and dropped out; I barely hung on myself. But Tom managed OK. This is all the more impressive because he was a year younger than most other kids. His parents must've let him skip a grade. Based on his age he "should have" graduated in 1977 not 1976. Clearly Tom was one capable guy. It's so sad to see him gone, and at such an early age. RIP.

During the second semester of my senior year at HMS I sat right behind Tom in western civ class. One day while talking to him I shared a certain insight, relating to history and the future. Appearing very impressed he said "Yeah!" Then he added "You look like you can hardly wait." :) By now a few dozen of the '76 alumni have passed away. Frankly, there are a few I don't consider a great loss. But Tom Grakowsky was a very great loss. I wish he were still around....and there were many more like him
