"Under God" was added in the 1950's.

1903 - By the time he was merely 11 years old, the United States Department of Commerce and Labor was created by President Theodore Roosevelt to control the excesses of big business. The Court broke up the several entities that comprised Standard Oil and they eventually became competing firms.

1973 - He was 81 years old when on January 28th, the Paris Peace Accord was signed - supposedly ending the Vietnam War. Hostilities continued between North and South Vietnam and the U.S. continued to bomb. But by August 15, 1973, 95% of American troops had left Vietnam. The war ended in 1975 with the fall of Saigon.

1974 - In the year of Thomas Sam's passing, on July 30th, the House Judiciary Committee adopted three articles of impeachment against President Nixon. He was charged with obstruction of justice, failure to uphold laws, and the refusal to produce material subpoenaed by the committee. In order to avoid impeachment, Richard M. Nixon announced that he would resign on August 8th, the first President to do so.
