In 1858, in the year that Thomas William Mitchell was born, on January 25th, the "Wedding March" - composed by Felix Mendelssohn - became a popular wedding recessional after being played at the marriage of Queen Victoria's daughter Victoria - eldest child of Victoria and Albert and Princess Royal. Princess Victoria was married to Prince Friedrich of Prussia in St James's Palace, London and as with all things royal in Victorian England, everyone wanted it played at their wedding.

In 1891, by the time he was 33 years old, on March 14th, a lynch mob stormed the Old Parish Prison. The mob lynched 11 of the 19 Italians who were arrested for - but found to be innocent of - the murder of New Orleans Police Chief David Hennessy.

In 1909, when he was 51 years old, the NAACP was founded by W. E. B. Du Bois. The organization focused on legal strategies designed to confront the critical civil rights issues of the day - which included lynching and segregation in schools. The goal was to secure for all people the rights guaranteed in the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments to the United States Constitution.

In 1915, at the age of 57 years old, Thomas was alive when Audrey Munson, playing a model for a sculptor in the film "Inspiration", became the first actress to shed her clothes on screen. Fearing that banning the film would mean that censors would also have to "ban Renaissance art" the film was released, with Munson in the nude scenes and a stand-in doing the acting. (Munson had previously been "America's First Supermodel" and posed nude as the model for many famous artworks.) The film was a hit with audiences.

In 1950, in the year of Thomas William Mitchell's passing, on October 2, Charlie Brown appeared in the first Peanuts comic strip - created by Charles Schultz - and he was the only character in that strip. That year, Schultz said that Charlie was 4 years old, but Charlie aged a bit through the years.
