In 1803, by the time he was 62 years old, on October 20th, Congress ratified the Louisiana Purchase. The United States agreed to pay France $15 million for the Louisiana Territory - an area of about 830,000 sq miles. This one act doubled the size of the United States.

In 1804, when he was 63 years old, on July 11th, Alexander Hamilton, former Secretary of the Treasury, and Aaron Burr, Vice President of the United States, fought a duel. Alexander Hamilton was shot and died the next day. Burr was indicted for murder and was acquitted but his political career was ruined.

In 1806, he was 65 years old when on April 18th, the U.S. Congress passed the Non-importation Act. The Act forbade the importation of numerous goods from Great Britain, which was impressing American sailors into British service. The hope that was by impacting the British economy, the U.S. could stop the warlike practices of the English.

In 1814, Timothy was 73 years old when on December 24th, the Treaty of Ghent was signed, officially ending the War of 1812 between Great Britain and the United States. It took 2 months for the news of the Treaty to reach the United States - in the meantime, the Battle of New Orleans was fought.

In 1825, in the year of Timothy Wight's passing, on August 18th, the Panic of 1825 began in London and spread to Europe, Latin America, and the United States. It affected Great Britain most strongly, leading to the closing of six banks in London and 60 banks in the country. Scottish adventurer - and trickster - Gregor MacGregor had invented a fictional Latin American country called Poyais and persuaded others to invest in the "country". The loss of funds on the part of banks and others began the panic.
