Did you know?
In 1917, in the year that Una Kavanagh was born, in April, the U.S. entered World War I, declaring war against Germany. President Wilson had previously declared neutrality in the war - a position supported by the majority of Americans - but after Germany declared that they would sink all ships trading with Great Britain and sunk U.S. ships, public opinion began to change. Then the Lusitania was sunk, killing 1,201 - including 128 Americans - and more U.S. ships were sunk. The U.S. could stand aside no longer.

In 1922, Una was just 5 years old when on James Joyce's 40th birthday, his book Ulysses was published in France. The book covers the experiences of an Irishman in Dublin on an ordinary day, 16 June 1904. Now considered a classic, it was controversial at the time. Due to some sexual content, the book was banned in the U.S. during the 1920's and the U.S. Post Office destroyed 500 copies of the novel.

Everyday Style & Fashion Trends In The 1930's
House dresses for the morning, afternoon dresses for going out, glamorous evening dresses and fur . . . women's fashion was expanding in the 1930's. During the 1930's, women still made their own clothing (lots of examples below, including a real sack dress), but manufactured dresses also came into their own and were actually cheaper. A dress for 49 cents - Really? That’s under $8.00 in today’s dollars! Discover 1930's fashion - a beautiful time for dressing and one that still influences designers today.
