Vera May (Moschetti) Newman of Marysborough Australia was born in 1918 in Maryborough, Central Goldfields Shire County, VIC to George Alexander Moschetti and Daisy May (Barned) Moschetti. She had siblings Herbert Alexander Moschetti, Arthur George Moschetti, Kathleen Mary "Kitty" Moschetti, Olive Rose Moschetti, George Albert Barnard Moschetti, Joseph Patrick "Joey" Moschetti, Ronald Sydney Moschetti, and Henry James "Harry" Moschetti. Vera Newman married William Leslie Newman in 1939, and died at age 60 years old on November 19, 1979 in Williamstown, City of Hobsons Bay County.

In 1918, in the year that Vera May "Masi" Moschetti was born, on November 1, an elevated train on the Brooklyn line of the subway - driven by an inexperienced operator because of a strike - tried to navigate a turn at 30mph. The limit on the curve was 6 mph. The 2nd and 3rd cars of the 5 car wooden train were badly damaged and at least 93 people were killed, making it the deadliest crash in New York subway history.

In 1920, when she was merely 2 years old, in September, a bomb exploded in the J.P. Morgan bank building in New York City, killing 30 people immediately - 8 later died due to their injuries - and injuring another 200. Killing more people than the 1910 bombing of the LA Times (the deadliest terrorist act up until then), no one took responsibility and the perpetrators were never found. Italian anarchists were suspected of the bombing.
