  • Introduction

    Vernon Victor Vistine was my (John H. Vistine) dad. He was born on August 9, 1923 in Waukomis, Oklahoma. He ended up living on a farm five miles south of Seiling, Oklahoma, at age 14, with his mother’s brother - Leo Hurt. His mother’s name was Mary (Hurt) Vistine and died in 1934. Vernon V. Vistine was drafted at age 18 in 1941. Vernon was a T5 corporal in the 275 Combat Engineers Battalion and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. Vernon lived in Lorenzo, Texas with his wife Jerelean M. Vistine until his sudden death on May 21, 1983. He did move to Paducah, Texas in 1978-1980, then moved to Woodward, Oklahoma in 1980, and then to Seiling, Oklahoma until 1983. He then returned to Lorenzo, Texas in September of 1983 and passed in May the same year. He had seven children.

  • Early Life & Education

    Vernon’s dad, Charles Carl Vistine, came to the USA from Birch, Czechoslovakia in 1900. Charles was 3 years old. He became an naturalized U. S. Citizen in 1931 in Enid, Oklahoma. Vernon went to school until the 10th grade, but worked in a broom factory in 1934 at age eleven. Vernon was sent to Belgium during WWII with the 275th Combat Engineers. Because his native language was Czech/German, and was the only language spoken at home because his grandmother only spoke Czech, Vernon was fluent in 7 German dialects during the war. He told stories of being the lead truck on night movements leading the convoys in WWII. His unit went into Combat on December 24, 1944 and was in three major battle campaigns for the next three months. He was a smart man with a tenth grade education and spoke multiple languages. He was a builder, building cars, houses and anything he wanted to build.
  • Military Service

    U. S. Army 75th Infantry Division, 275th Combat Engineers, World War II veteran and fought in Battle of the Bulge and fought to end of the war pushing into Germany.
  • Professional Career

    Parts Department Manager for International Harvester and a diesel mechanic.
  • Personal Life & Family

    Vernon served as a Boy Scout Master for several years with his second oldest son achieving Eagle Scout.
