In 1841, in the year that Walter Barry was born, on March 4th, William Henry Harrison was inaugurated as the ninth President of the United States. On April 4th, President Harrison died of pneumonia, becoming the first President who died in office - as well as the American president with the shortest term ever served. Vice-President John Tyler immediately became the tenth President of the United States.

In 1859, when he was 18 years old, on February 14th, Oregon became the 33rd U.S. state. In its state constitution, Oregon included a "whites only" clause although it was never enforced.

In 1863, Walter was 22 years old when on June 20th, West Virginia was admitted as the 35th state of the United States. West Virginia was formed when the pro-Union citizens in northwest Virginia wanted to separate from Virginia - which had joined the Confederacy.

In 1889, by the time he was 48 years old, on April 20th, Adolf Hitler was born in Austria-Hungary - now Austria. In his early 30's, he began his rise to power in German politics, eventually becoming the leader of the Nazi Party and Führer of Nazi Germany. He presided over the death of millions of civilians as well as leading Germany through World War II.

In 1896, in the year of Walter Barry's passing, on August 17th, the first pedestrian v car fatality occurred in Great Britain. Bridget Driscoll, age 44, was walking with her family on the grounds of The Crystal Palace in London when she was hit by a car driven by Arthur James Edsall. Edsall claimed to be going 4.5 mph and Driscoll's death was ruled an "accidental death" after an inquest.
