In 1801, by the time he was 25 years old, on November 10th, the state of Kentucky outlawed dueling. The oath of office for Kentucky has since said: ""I, being a citizen of this State, have not fought a duel with deadly weapons within this State nor out of it, nor have I sent or accepted a challenge to fight a duel with deadly weapons, nor have I acted as second in carrying a challenge, nor aided or assisted any person thus offending, so help me God."

In 1814, at the age of 38 years old, William was alive when on September 14th, Francis Scott Key wrote what we now know as the lyrics of the Star-Spangled Banner while he watched the British attack on Fort McHenry in Baltimore Harbor. He originally wrote a poem titled "Defence of Fort M'Henry". The lyrics of the poem were then set to the tune of a popular English song. It wasn't until 1931 that the song became the official national anthem of the United States.

In 1821, he was 45 years old when on May 5th, former Emperor of France, Napoleon Bonaparte, died in exile on Saint Helena - ruled by the British - perhaps of stomach cancer. Supposedly, his last words were "France, army, head of the army, Jos├ęphine".

In 1831, by the time he was 55 years old, on January 1st, William Lloyd Garrison began publishing The Liberator, an antislavery newspaper, in Boston Massachusetts. Published until 1865, the paper was strongly abolitionist and advocated the "immediate and complete emancipation of all slaves".

In 1858, in the year of William Allen, Sr.'s passing, on May 11th, Minnesota became the 32nd U.S. state. It was previously the eastern half of the Minnesota Territory.
