William Beckman's History: 1879 - 1971

  • Introduction

I think this William Beckman (born as Wilhelm Beckmann in Germany) indeed had a Relationship: Searching my Familytree I found out that William was the brother of my Grand-Grandmother (Wilhelmine "Minna" Beckmann). William left Germany soon after WW1. Also his brother August Beckmann left Germany for the U.S. William and his Wife Mary and their daughter Pearl visited Germany in the 1950s. My Mother remembers their visit. It must be a big coincidence if the William Beckman shown here is not the William that is buried in Prospect Hill cemetary in Wessington Springs. His year of birth and death are the same. Am I wrong? Regards Harry Germany

An 1883 poem by Emma Lazarus was also written to raise funds. That poem was included in the base of the statue and is well known today. The most famous phrase: "Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
