In 1806, Noah Webster published his first dictionary, A Compendious Dictionary of the English Language. It was the first truly American dictionary, incorporating the idioms and language of the day. Thus began his effort to standardize the American language, which was regionally different. It took him 26 years to complete the entire project.

In 1815, on June 18th, the Battle of Waterloo was fought. Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, and Gebhard Leberecht von Bl├╝cher decisively defeated Napoleon's troops. The defeat at Waterloo ended Napoleon's rule as Emperor of the French. Napoleon would die in exile six years later.

In 1831, on January 1st, William Lloyd Garrison began publishing The Liberator, an antislavery newspaper, in Boston Massachusetts. Published until 1865, the paper was strongly abolitionist and advocated the "immediate and complete emancipation of all slaves".

In 1851, on April 28th, Santa Clara College - now Santa Clara University - was chartered. A private Jesuit college, it has remained in the same location for over 165 years. Originally all students were men but women were admitted in 1961.

In 1866, in the year of William Belford's passing, on February 13th, the first robbery committed by Jesse James and his gang - a daylight bank robbery - occurred in Liberty, Missouri. Jesse's presence has been disputed but most historians agree that he was there.
