In 1865, in the year that William Campbell Southey was born, on January 4th, the New York Stock Exchange - "The Big Board" - opened its first permanent headquarters. It was at 10-12 Broad, near Wall Street, in New York City.

In 1866, in the year of William Campbell Southey's passing, on April 10th, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals - the ASPCA - was created. New Yorker Henry Bergh was the first President of the Society and the leader in its creation. He later formed the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children.

In 1867, William was just 2 years old when on March 30th, Alaska was bought by the US from Russia for $7.2 million dollars, which worked out to about 2 cents per acre. The newspapers called it "Seward's Folly" because United States Secretary of State William H. Seward negotiated the purchase and Alaska was seen as frozen, useless land.

In 1868, when he was merely 3 years old, on October 28th, Thomas Edison - age 21 - applied for his first patent. It was for the electric vote recorder and was designed to make voting quicker and the counting of votes more accurate. Congress didn't like the idea so Edison's voting machine was never used.

In 1872, at the age of just 7 years old, William was alive when on December 4th, the empty American ship Mary Celeste was found in the Atlantic Ocean. Still seaworthy, under partial sail, and with one lifeboat missing, what happened on her is still a mystery. Her cargo and provisions were intact and she was used as a cargo vessel for another 12 years but the people onboard were never seen again
