He was in a relationship with Mamie Marie (Lange) Hensen, and had children Ernest William Hensen, Louie Edson Hensen, Emery Edward "Hank" Hensen, and Harriet Mae Lamb. William Henson died at age 71 years old on November 12, 1955.

In 1884, in the year that William Edward Henson was born, on December 6th, the Washington Monument was completed. Building began in 1848 but was stopped because of lack of funds and also due to the Civil War. It would be dedicated in 1885. At the time of its completion, it was the tallest structure in the world.

In 1892, at the age of merely 8 years old, William was alive when on January 1st, Ellis Island opened to process immigrants. 700 passed through on the first day - in the first year, 450,000 were processed.
