In 1813, on March 29th, in the Mexican War of Independence, the Battle of Rosillo Creek took place. The Republican Army of the North defeated the Spanish Royalist Army in present-day Bexar County, Texas. On April 1st, the Royalists surrendered to the Republican Army. On April 6th, the Republican Army issued a draft declaration of independence.

In 1844, in June and July, the "Great Flood of 1844" occurred on the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers - the largest flood recorded in that area. The population in the area was sparse at the time, though, so the flood didn't have a lot of economic impact. The biggest loss was to the Wyandot Indians - 100 people died from diseases caused by the flood.

In 1859, on February 14th, Oregon became the 33rd U.S. state. In its state constitution, Oregon included a "whites only" clause although it was never enforced.

In 1884, on December 6th, the Washington Monument was completed. Building began in 1848 but was stopped because of lack of funds and also due to the Civil War. It would be dedicated in 1885. At the time of its completion, it was the tallest structure in the world.

In 1917, in the year of William Futter's passing, the NHL (National Hockey League) was established as a response to the demise of the National Hockey Association (NHA). The first superstar of the League was "Phantom" Joe Malone of the Montreal Canadiens, a leading scorer with records that still stand. The Canadiens won the NHL championship over the Senators.
