  • Introduction

William Balch was born in 1752 in Deer Creek, Hartford County, Maryland, USA: he passed away on 14 Oct 1822 in Moulton, Lawrence County, Alabama, USA On April 14, 2012 the Stephens Chapter, with the Tennessee Valley Chapter SAR Color Guard participating, placed a granite marker with the engraved NSDAR Insignia on the grave of North Carolina Patriot, William Goodwin Balch in Moulton, Alabama. It was attended by State Vice Regent and State Regent Elect Connie Grund, along with members of National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution chapters, Lawrence County Historical Association, and Morgan County Genealogical Society. William Goodwin Balch’s descendents from Pennsylvania, Florida, Georgia , Kentucky, and local Balch families were honored guests. William Goodwin Balch was not a soldier in the Revolutionary War, but provided supplies for colonial troops from his family’s plantation in North Carolina. Balch moved to Moulton in 1807 to live with his daughter Martha. He was buried at Moulton, Alabama in the Milam-Campground Cemetery on October 14, 1822. Nearly 20 years of research helped to verify the location of the patriot’s grave, which was made difficult because the original field stone marker was missing. During the marker dedication, David Balch, a 4th generation grandson read the original handwritten obituary from William Balch’s funeral in 1822. The obituary was provided by Jay Farrar, a 4th generation grandson. Following the dedication, the Stephens Chapter hosted a reception at the First Methodist Church of Moulton, Alabama.
