William James Holdaway 1877 - 1915

William James Holdaway was born in 1877 to James Walter Holdaway and Lucy Annie (Roberts) Holdaway, and had siblings Arthur John Holdaway, Walter Thomas Holdaway, Charles Holdaway, Frank Richard Holdaway, Frederick Holdaway, and Edith May (Holdaway) Back. He married Edie (Rigley) Holdaway, and had children Sgt. Leslie James Holdaway, Edna May (Holdaway) Stokes, Rita Holdaway, Cecil George Holdaway, and Audrey Holdaway. William Holdaway died at age 37 years old on May 10, 1915 at Gallipoli Peninsula in Gelibolu County, Çanakkale Turkey.

In 1877, in the year that William James Holdaway was born, on January 8th, the Battle of Wolf Mountain occurred in southern Montana Territory. Crazy Horse, Two Moon, and their warriors fought the United States Cavalry. The battle was a tactical draw and by May, Crazy Horse and his followers had surrendered at Camp Robinson.
