In 1864, in the year that William Lennard was born, on April 22nd, the Coinage Act of 1864 was passed by Congress. It mandated that "In God We Trust" was to be placed on all United States coins and created a 2 cent coin. Later - in 1956 - "In God We Trust" replaced "E Pluribus Unum" - which means out of many, one - as the national motto.

In 1866, in the year of William Lennard's passing, on February 13th, the first robbery committed by Jesse James and his gang - a daylight bank robbery - occurred in Liberty, Missouri. Jesse's presence has been disputed but most historians agree that he was there.

In 1867, he was just 3 years old when on January 8th, African-American men were given the right to vote in the District of Columbia when Congress overrode President Andrew Johnson's veto. This was the first place in the U.S. to give African Americans the right to vote.

In 1870, at the age of just 6 years old, William was alive when on March 31st, Thomas Mundy Peterson was the first African-American male who voted in an election - a local election about the town charter. Peterson, a school principal, was also the first to hold elected office and the first to sit on a jury.

In 1875, at the age of merely 11 years old, William was alive when on February 18th, the Mason County War, also called the Hoodoo War, began. In central Texas, a German-American mob broke into a jail with a battering ram and lynched two suspected cattle rustlers. Thus began a year of vigilante "justice."
