It also established an immigration quota in which only 3 per cent of the total population of any ethnic group already in the USA in 1910, could be admitted to America after 1921. The reasons for the explosion are still disputed.

1954 - At the age of 33 years old, William was alive when from April 22 through June 17th, the Army v. McCarthy hearings were held. The Army allegations were found to be true. The U.S. Senate later censured McCarthy.

1959 - He was 38 years old when on January 3rd, Alaska became the 49th state of the United States and the first state not a part of the contiguous United States. The flag was changed to display 49 stars.

1969 - In the year of William Macon's passing, one hundred countries, along with the United States and the Soviet Union signed the nuclear nonproliferation treaty (NPT). It called for stopping the spread of nuclear weapons, the peaceful use of nuclear energy, and the goal of nuclear disarmament.
