Introduction

The Portland Guardian. Vic. 27th November 1922. - Death Of Pioneer. In his ninetieth year Mr. William Poland passed away at his home, South Portland, on Monday last, almost simultaneously, remarkable to relate, with the pageant of the landing of the Hentys at 8:30 that morning. The late Mr. Poland was closely associated with the old pioneers of this district, and his death severs practically the last link with the very early days. He landed here in 1856, and settled at Muntham, but shortly afterwards removed to Portland. There he met Edward Henry, for whom he managed "Burswood," the original homestead, for 25 years. The deceased gentleman was of high moral and religious character, and his main thought throughout his long life was for the uplifting of his fellowmen. He was a devout member of Wesley Church, and for 25 years conducted a young men's class there. Out of a family of seven only two girls survive, and his wife predeceased him 9 years ago.

In 1833, in the year that William Poland was born, on April 18th, over 300 delegates from England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland called on the office of the Prime Minister of Great Britain to demand the immediate abolition of slavery throughout the British Empire. Following this, slavery was abolished by the Slavery Abolition Act 1833 - with exceptions provided for the East India Company, Ceylon, and Saint Helena.

In 1841, William was merely 8 years old when on August 16th, President John Tyler vetoed a bill to re-establish the Second Bank of the United States - America's Central Bank. President Jackson had previously dissolved the bank and Tyler's veto angered the Whig Party (his own party). Rioters gathered outside the White House and burned Tyler in effigy, threw stones at the White House, and fired guns. It may have been the most violent demonstration on White House grounds in U.S. history.
