  • Introduction

William was my grandfather's brother. He was a soldier with the 2nd Battalion, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers and landed in France on 24th August 1914 with the British Expeditionary Force to defend France and liberate Belgium. Outnumbered 4 to 1, his regiment, and the other Irish regiments, fought the greatest rearguard action in military history, allowing the other British and French units to their right to pull back under their protection to reform and defend Paris. William was wounded and found by a dispatch rider who repeatedly tried to put him on his horse. William kept sliding off, until advancing shellfire caused the dispatch rider to flee for his life. William's body was never recovered. The 'Four Soldier Sons' of the Ruddy family of 21 Ardgowan Street, Belfast, were later written about in the Belfast press. William was KIA, Richard was taken POW, my grandfather Jacob was WIA three times in Gallipoli and France and Joseph was WIA twice in France.
