Inside Mid 20th Century Department Stores
In the 19th century, general stores were the place to shop for everything. Eventually these small businesses morphed into department stores of the 20th century. In the 21st century of course internet shopping became the new way to get what you wanted. These photos highlight the mid 20th century department store where there was an elevator operator announcing the floors (second floor, shoes, hats, jewelry, lingerie; third floor mezzanine and cafe...). Where you could buy everything from tobacco products to notions to high fashion. Discover what shopping used to be like when it was a destination, but also a pastime.

30 Halloween Costumes Best Left In History
While witches, ghosts, and vampires are commonplace Halloween costumes today, I bet you won't recognize many of the costumes our ancestors dressed in. Spooky, silly, homemade, and store bought - these photos show the creative and often whimsy Halloween costumes from previous decades. How many of these costumes do you recognize?

Graceful Fashion - Popular Clothing in the 1900s
Skirts skimming the ground often with trains, high collars, big hats with lots of feathers - sometimes even with whole stuffed birds, ribbons, and flowers, the last heyday for corsets, and the rise of designer houses. 1900 through 1909 started with a continuation of the 1800's and lead to the great profile changes of the 1910's. Women's shoes had pointed toes and there was a shoe for every occasion including Oxfords, evening slippers, and boots. Gibson girl hair was all the rage, and the biggest change for men was with curled mustaches. Discover the fashion of the early 1900's.
