Clarence Liv & Alonso Tucker 1897 Ohio
Clarence Liv, nicknamed Grandpa, and Alonso Tucker, nicknamed Teddy, behind the Wright Cycle Company around 1897 in Dayton Ohio.

The Wright Brothers (Wilbur and Orville) are credited with taking this photo, which makes it interesting, but I especially love the boys! I wonder what Clarence did to earn the nickname "Grandpa" - maybe he was one of those boys who was wise for his age. And I love Teddy's eyes!

People in photo include: Clarence "Grandpa" Liv and Alonzo "Teddy" Tucker
Date & Place: at Wright Cycle Company in Dayton, Ohio USA

Button up and sit still. I always have lots of questions about 'ancient' pictures. I am sure I am not alone.

Pictures were actually quite crisp during this era. It was usually the sitters moving that made them blurry. This was a little later and outdoors, so the shutter speeds would've been much shorter.

That couldn't be painted over graffiti in back of them, could it? Was there graffiti on buildings in 1897? :)

Grizelda Leach Yep. On monuments all over the world - "Kilroy" was here, dates - but I didn't see graffiti on commercial buildings until the last few decades. Was I missing something? :)
I've not seen it depicted in portraits, but then again, I don't think it's something that would have been painted. Maybe cross reference with journal entries already loaded onto Google play?

As long as there has been writing utensils, there has been graffiti. I think the real question is did they cover up graffiti with the same type of "buffing" as they do now. I think you may be unnecessarily associating the modern graffiti abatement techniques with what you're seeing in the picture.

Those scuffs could really be there for any reason. This was the back of a commercial building, so it could've been related to the shop or weather related for all we know. Someone could've drawn on there, but since there's absolutely no Trace of lettering (indentations, ink, pencil, paint), it's highly unlikely.

There's always been "Teddy was here" type stuff throughout history, but to answer your question, graffiti as we know it as far as tagging commercial buildings started in the 60's with a guy who went by Taki 183 (named for the street he lived on in Manhattan). He actually wasn't the first, but he was the guy who really made his way around the city seeing how many different places he could put his name. He was a messenger so he really made the rounds. He became so prolific that he inspired a whole wave of kids with their own nicknames trying to outdo each other. The more elaborate spray painted tags and murals come around during the mid to late 70's and early 80's.

There are a few well known early examples of graffiti. The one that really comes to mind is on the Temple of Dendur, which is on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Napoleonic era soldiers carved their name right in the stone. My favorite is "Leonardo 1820" because it sounds like one of those 70's era NYC tags. There was another incident somewhat recently where the curators of the South Street Seaport uncovered a wall covered with 19th century graffiti. The space held shipping companies as well as a hotel for sailors over the years. The space was saved and preserved. As far as "Kilroy" goes, the character was popular among soldiers during WWII. It probably dates back to the 30's sometime.

I am wondering if they did the graffiti and had to paint over it and sit in front of it.

I doubt there was any graffiti on the first place. Looks like just scuffs on a wall. It wouldn't make sense for them for clean the wall, then have them pose in front of it wearing their Sunday best. Looks it's just a nice picture of 2 kids.

I am researching Tasker, Jones, Bowen, Rees of Wales; Kroetch, Chartrand of Canada; and Boggs, Ferguson, Smith, of West Virginia and Eastern Kentucky. Also Steeples of Kansas. And on my mother's New England roots - well, too numerous to name since she descends from Mayflower passengers as well as Dutch East India captains who arrived with their families before the Mayflower landed further north than was planned. :)
I'm a Founder of AncientFaces and support the community answering questions & helping members make connections to the past (thus my official title of Founder & Content and Community Director). For me, it's been a labor of love for over 20 years. I truly believe with all of my heart that everyone should be remembered for generations to come. I am 2nd generation San Jose and have seen a lot of changes in the area while growing up. We used to be known as the "Valley of Heart's Delight" (because the Valley was covered with orchards and there were many canneries to process the food grown here, which shipped all over the US) - now we have adopted the nickname "Capital of Silicon Valley" and Apple, Ebay, Adobe, Netflix, Facebook, and many more tech companies are within a few miles of my current home in Campbell (including AncientFaces). From a small town of 25,000, we have grown to 1 million plus. And when you add in all of the communities surrounding us (for instance, Saratoga, where I attended high school, living a block from our current Mayor), we are truly one of the big cities in the US. I am so very proud of my hometown. For more information see Kathy - Founder & Content and Community Director
