I never knew my farming grandparents...Walter and Josephine, my mother's parents. Walter died when my mom was just 14. He was only 54, but he contracted double pneumonia, 6 years before penicillin came into use. Josephine died 8 years before I was born. They were refugees from Russia-Occupied Poland.

There are no photos of him, sadly, but they would have been interesting...he was over 6 feet tall and Josephine was only 4 feet 8 inches!

One of my mother's older brothers (she was 3rd youngest in a family of 10) still owned part of the old family farm. It wasn't a working farm anymore, but he and my aunt had a nice farmhouse, barn, and lots of fields. My mother and one of her sisters also owned two lots at the northern end of the old farm, and that's where I was born (well, in a nearby hospital)...a little house at the end of a dirt road with tall pines bordering the place, and I'd fall asleep each night listening to the sound of the wind through those pines.

My share-cropper grandparents were Harvey and Sadie. My farm-owner grandparents were Leslie and Hazel.

My mother’s grandmother did. She even rather looked like that, but smaller. She’d let me feed the chickens with her. 💞
That house, walked out the back door onto the porch, onto another porch, there was the kitchen. Not attached to the house but by the porches. Probably the warmest place to be during winter. Thanks for bringing those memories back.

Here's a photo of my great-grandparents' four-legged chicken. Poor thing froze to death one night on their Illinois farm about 100 years ago.
