Your request to know more about the young man inspired me to research on Ancestry. Above is what I found. The headstone at his grave also has names of other soldiers he serviced with. He did not die alone.
Found on ancestry. Picture above taken in 1911. Frank was born 1891 to Edmund Charles Burfield and Amelia Burfield in Bromley by Bow, London, England. He had 6 siblings. In 1901 census shows the family are members of the Lyonsdoun Holy Trinity Parish in the town New Barnet, Hertfordshire, England. In 1911 Frank enlisted in Westminster, Middx, serving in the Army 7th Ben Middlesex Regt. as a Lance Corporal of Household Cavalry. Regiment selected, Royal Horse Guard. Documents show during the Western European War Theatre, L. Corporal Frank Burfield was killed in Action the 19th of November 1914 at the age of 23 yrs old age in France & Flanders. Burial in the Ypres [Menin Gate] Memorial Cemetery in Ypres, West Flanders, Belgium
This was the last year for the dashing Cuirassiers of Belgium and France. The advent of the machine gun and rapid fire magazine fed rifles made the massed cavalry charges suicidal. The Germans and British still used light cavalry for a while but mostly for reconnoitering. The war had begun as a war of movement but as of 16 Sept. 1914 after the Battle of the Marne, Static trench warfare made cavalry all but obsolete
The uniform is of a Trooper of The Royal Horse Guards (The Blues), who amalgamated with The Royal Dragoons in 1969 to become The Blues and Royals. Along with The Life Guards (with whom i served in more modern times) they form the two regiments of The Household Cavalry. Both Regiments were almost wiped out at the Battle of Zandvoorde in Flanders 1914. There is now a excellent Memorial at the site to remember those who never came back.
PS, A uniform like this would have last been worn in battle during the Napoleonic wars, during WW1, and WW2, they wore the same khaki service uniform as other soldiers. The state uniform is now worn only for ceremonial, and state occasions, but both Regiments are still also operational fighting units.
Frank Henry Thomas Burfield was born on November 19, 1891 at At home East Barnet Road, in Barnet County, and died at age 23 years old on November 19, 1914 in Belgium. Frank Burfield was buried at Ypres (menin Gate) Memorial Panel 3. in England. Family, friend, or fan, this family history biography is for you to remember Frank Henry Thomas Burfield.
