Herbert Leslie Matthews Sr was born on August 7, 1889 in Tippecanoe County, Indiana United States to Newman Hamlin Matthews and Anna (Swanson) Matthews, and had siblings Mable Irene (Matthews) Reeder, Ralph Waldo Matthews, Carl Newman Matthews, Iva Lenore (Mathews) Denton, Nellie Ruth (Matthews) Cox, and Bernice Elizabeth (Matthews) Blase. He married Goldie May (Reeder) Matthews on January 6, 1918, and they were married until Herbert's death on September 11, 1965. He had children James Douglas Matthews, Mary Luella (Matthews) Davies - Bobbitt, Anna Louise (Matthews) Dillane, Stanley Edward Matthews, Herbert Leslie Matthews, Betty Jean (Matthews) Bogan, Carl Eugene Matthews, and Ethel May (Matthews) Gahimer.
