Ivory Soap advertisement from 1898 showing a pioneer washing with Ivory soap at his campsite.

The poster says: Title: "You need only one soap - Ivory soap." Bottom: "Pure - first quality, not expensive Will wash anything no chapping It Floats"

Consider the fact that for generations, people had made their own lye soap. (Some still did.) Lye soap was caustic, not a wonderful experience for clothes or body.

Procter and Gamble was saying that you could use Ivory for your clothes, your dishes, and your body. It worked and it didn't burn. That's why it is still around today!
