Mother's Day - Ann Jarvis, PA
Ann Maria Reeves Jarvis is the mother of the founder ( Anna Jarvis ) of the United States national holiday Mother's Day.

Ann Jarvis was a social activist and leader who encouraged mothers to collaborate together during the US. Civil War. She led the "Mothers Day Works Clubs" which met at local churches and provided medical care equally to soldiers from both sides.

Ann Maria Reeves Jarvis was born September 30th, 1832 in Culpeper Virginia, and died May 9th, 1905 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania.

Shortly after Ann's death, her daughter, Anna Marie Jarvis began a successful campaign to form a holiday to honor the contributions of all mothers in society. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson designated the second Sunday in May as the nationally recognized holiday, Mother's Day. Interesting to note, by the 1920's Anna was already upset by the quick commercialization of the holiday!
Date & Place: in Pennyslvania USA

Sunday is Mother's Day! I don't know about you but being a mother myself, I think we all deserve more than just ONE day! ;)

Did you know we didn't even have a Mother's Day until 1914? Thanks to the efforts of Anna Jarvis, the daughter of Ann Maria Reeves Jarvis, the day we celebrate as "Mother's Day" was created.

Ann Maria Reeves Jarvis was a social activist herself who rallied mothers to collaborate during the U.S. Civil War. Read about her accomplishments and why her daughter rallied for Mother's Day

I want to build a place where my son can meet his great-grandparents. My grandmother Marian Joyce (Benning) Kroetch always wanted to meet her great-grandchildren, but she died just a handful of years before my son's birth. So while she didn't have the opportunity to meet him, at least he will be able to know her. For more information about what we're building see About AncientFaces. My father's side is full blood Sicilian and my mother's side is a combination of Welsh, Scottish, German and a few other European cultures. One of my more colorful (ahem black sheep) family members came over on the Mayflower. He was among the first to be hanged in the New World for a criminal offense he made while onboard the ship.
