It is against the law to pump your own gas in New Jersey and they will check your oil and clean your windshield if you ask them to do so. Law was passed to help keep jobs. Has been this way for years in that state. Do not know if there are other states with this law.

Oct 18, 2014 ·
Ann Deaver
yeah, I hear ya. You have to ask in Jersey and some of them are pretty surly about it, but they will do it. We would check oil, tranny fluid, air in tires and wash front and back windows. Good way to sell motor oil and trannie fluid. Was back in the early 70's when we had a 2 bay station. BP bought out Sinclair and made us close the bays down so we sold the station. You don't make much of a profit on just gas. We made most of it on repairs.

This missy is a loaded statement. This is America people come from everywhere to live and work here, and have the right to do so. I am Hispanic, I too believe that employees should be able to speak and understand English, however the manor in which you wrote reads... Well quite nasty, mean, disrespectful, inconsiderate, hateful, maybe even racist. The post was about full service gas stations not whether or not the attendants could or should speak English. Remember Native Americans lived here long before anybody else so the rest of us have ancestors that were foreigners.

Some enterprising soul should open up a service station around here - and do repairs, pump your gas - I can remember having car trouble, pulling in a gas station and being back on the road in an hour or two. Now you have to find a garage that won't totally rip you off - and after 5:00 - forget it - you're screwed.

Then you handed over a cash payment at 50cents a gallon. The rest was free. Then they brought the change to you sitting in your car. When you drove away, you got a smile and a friendly wave!! Theresa Blackburn I'm older than you so I can remember 24 cents a gallon with gas wars all the time at 19 cents! Who can believe it these days? Any teen could and would for $2 do all the cruising and everything else a teen might do in their big gas hogs! Most original and loved cars of the time also-IMHO! :-)

I can remember 19cents when Jim and I went to Mexico one time and the gas wars I just said 29cents because that was the going price when I was about17 and started paying for my gas some!so your not that much older!!! Lol coming from a large family and not being the youngest or the oldest does come with some benefits I got to experience some of both generations changes at a time in my life that worked to my future understanding of both!!!😊love u

I ran a " SERVICE STATION " in my early youth. You forgot check the tires. Then there was oil changes and flat to fix by hand, and tune ups, and the good old car wash, by hand. Have you ever tried to change a tire by hand, with a flat iron and a mallet ? If not, you ain't had fun yet. And in the early 60's gas was $.15 a gallon, with trading stamps to boot. Do you remember trading stamps ? You would save them up in books and when you got enough, you would trade them for merchandise.

Oregon does not allow self serve. I do remember I grew up in one my father raised a family of five in the station business. My first job. Wash front and back window, check all fluid levels under the hood, check tire pressure. Yes real service.

Wish there were still a few around. Wouldn't mind paying over $3.00 a gallon if someone was checking my car's fluids and airing my tires occasionally still want a bunch of a lot lower priced stations but I'd occasionally say once a month I'd pay the extra to have my car serviced.

In the 60s, driving a '53 Buick Roadmaster (Stephanie Plum can relate), my broke college boyfriend had a couple of funny experiences at service stations when he asked for 50 cents worth of gas. Once, the attendant washed half the windshield. Another time the attendant asked "Are you going to burn it here or take it with you?"
