Photo of Seattle policemen wearing masks provided by the Red Cross to protect them from influenza. Seattle politicians feared that there would be mass hysteria due to the disease and so urged citizens to stay indoors and avoid congested areas.

These Seattle policemen were constantly patrolling the streets during the epidemic.

These policemen in 1918 Seattle are wearing masks given to them by the Red Cross. But do they have gloves? Shelter in place was in effect - but not to stop the spread of the disease. By the end of the pandemic, an estimated 50 - 100 million worldwide had died.
