Mary Leona Smith was born on December 11, 1892, in Salt Lake City, Utah, her father, Hyram, was 24 and her mother, Sarah, was 22. She married Alvin Theobald Thorup on April 15, 1914, in her hometown. They had three children in 11 years. She died on December 30, 1981, in Salt Lake City, Utah, at the age of 89. Here is a picture of her and her siblings! Mary Leona is the one in the chair.

I always think it's funny when people insinuate what people are thinking and/or feeling in photos when they have no idea of what they were really thinking. So I'll add my own narrative about the boy's facial expression: He's ticked off because he probably had to take a bath, then he had to dress in or stay in his Sunday clothes, standing perfectly still for this stupid photographer while posing with his stupid sisters, who actually LIKE being dressed up! He was probably threatened with a good hiding with the leather strap if he ruined another take with his squirming, and he can't play with his friends until this is over with! There, how's that for a completely fictional narrative?
