1912, carrying turkeys home after winning a raffle. I don't know about you, but looking at this photo all I can think about is killing the turkey, plucking it . . . I'm not sure I could do all of that!

I didn't pluck it, but I did cook a wild turkey once. Did not expect the "beard". It was one of the grossest things I've ever experienced.

I remember cleaning and gutting and plucking quails after the hunters got back. The birds were all in large metal wash basins. Haven’t eaten quail since. An incredible amount of work for a small amount of meat. And you had to pick out the birdshot, too.
I certainly wouldn’t want to do that with a whole turkey.

Years ago, various groups used to sponsor "turkey shoots". Never went to one, but these fellows might be some winners.

When I was a kid back in the early '50's, we lived on a farm and everytime we had chicken, someone had to pluck, gut and clean it before it could be cooked! Being the youngest, I usually had to do the plucking! Took all day to get supper ready.

I remember my family doing this when we lived on the ranch, kill the turkey then dunk it in boiling hot water to loosen the feathers. We kids had to pull the feathers. Dad did the killing, mom did the cooking, we did the rest LOL

I was always confused by the term "turkey shoot" at the local VFW's, etc but I found out when you won the shooting contest, you got a turkey (frozen)?so I guess this is kind of a continuation of a tradition???
