Description:
This photo was found in my grandmothers belongings. It looks to be a rite of passage in some way. Maybe a wedding, although the gentleman looks quite young. Maybe a graduation since they are holding some sort of certificate. If anyone has any idea please contact me at [contact link]
Thanks.

Beautiful photo, but we are not sure what it is of. Do you think this could have been for a graduation or confirmation? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I am going to make a copy of the photo. My Grandfather was a Thrasher and his grandparents has lived at Kelly Springs (just south of Goodman) and also in Goodman. I live only about 2 miles from what was known as the Kinslow Farm. Maybe some one can recoginize some or them. Kenney Harp

It was fashionable for girls to wear big bows in the back - and these were certainly big! Lovely.
Jun 03, 2016 · Reply

The most likely event is a graduation because of the diplomas in their hands. In addition, the women are dressed nearly the same, same bows etc. Small college? Some specialized class?
Jun 03, 2016 · Reply
Beatrice Elaine Albright
Not nurses, no male nurses - officially - back in the day and too fancy. Too many bows and ruffles. High school graduation sounds good. In some parts of the country classes could be small for any one year.

They look the right age for either but probably an 8th grade graduation. I would expect veils for the girls if it was a confirmation, and they seem to be holding diplomas. Maybe the 8th graders from a one room schoolhouse? It wouldn't have been high school, a lot of people only graduated from grammar school so it was a big deal, they would have been 13-15 years old.

Agree that it's probably 8th grade graduation. In some parts of the country, even into the 1960 and later, high school began at a separate school in 9th grade. Now there are middle schools in many states that include 9th grade while high school begins with 10th grade. So, back then 8th grade graduation would be a big deal, especially since many didn't go past that. My father only went as far as 8th grade and then went out to work at age 15 (in 1916).

This looks like a graduation to me the flowers are on some sort of a post they start at the top and wrap around to the girl on the left side of the picture and continue across the boy to the last girl on the right . The girl at the top left appears to be related to the girl at the bottom left . They're all wearing ribbons and this is definitely not a communion or confirmation. It seems to be a class picture....
