Winifred C. (Miller) Guile, was like no one else that existed. She would work long hours on the farm, in order that the family would have food, even during inclement weather, as the winters on the farm were difficult. She was a super and dedicated help-mate to her husband, Charles Wesley Guile, who had came to Kansas for the sole purpose of becoming and working his own farm. Whenever, someone came to visit, Great, Great Grandmother Guile, always had something to send with them, whether it was a porcelain cup, a mustache cup, etc. She never said a negative or hard word for anyone; even if her well wishes for an individuals were not returned, she still held the feeling of wishing well in her heart. She cooked, sewed, cleaned, weaved cloth, worked in her large garden, worked in her apple orchard, down by the stream, she baked, canned foods ahead, vegetables and meats, way ahead of time of them being needed, for the hard winter months. She would collect, clean, and sell, with the help of her daughter, Great Aunt Millie, taking them to town to sell them for whatever they could get out of them. Part of the cleaning process of the eggs, were wiping each one off with ETOH. She would remember everyone's birthday or a special day in a friend's life. She would always make sure she had something special to give to he or she for that special occasion. During her lifetime, and marriage, she had a total of 8 children. She spent special time with each, encouraging them to be the best that they could be, living up to the potential that God blessed each with. She would do her chores and essentials around the farm, in between the times she was taking special time with the children. She was tough! She had her last child between the ages of 47 or 48 years of age. This baby was my beloved Grandmother, Winifed M. (Guile) Clayton. Of course she was born at home, with no physician in attendance. Great Great Grandmother Guile, was back up, on her feet, ready to go back to the grueling work, she never complained about, this time with a basket, which had my Grandmother Winifred inside of it. So, after gathering up, and finally ready to get 'busy,' she returned out in the field and then in the garden working with the same stamina, she had before my Grandmother was born. The older children, several 25 to 27 years of age older than her called her affectionately, 'the baby.' Who in later years, the most loving sibling relationships were gifted between the 'baby,' and the other siblings. Another thing, which not as many individuals or family's take time or even have time to do anymore. Years ago, Memorial Day was known as Decoration Day, and the purpose was to honor the deceased soldiers by decorating their graves; many loved ones would also take the opportunity to decorate their passed kin, show their respect for the dear loved ones who they lost. My Grandma (Guile) Clayton, said she would remember every Decoration Day, and that she and her mother, would grow multiple dozens of Peonies to decorate the graves. They would cut the Peonies off as far as they could at the stalks, put them in a large metal tub, and put them in the back of the horse drawn wagon. Then, they would drive to the cemetery, where most of the family was buried, Pleasant Ridge. My Grandmother, my mother, and myself, have tried to carry on not only this tradition, but the goodness of heart and kindness to all men, no matter of their actions.
