Ralph Richardson
Sir Ralph David Richardson (19 December 1902 – 10 October 1983) was an English actor who, with John Gielgud and Laurence Olivier, was one of the trinity of male actors who dominated the British stage for much of the 20th century. He worked in films throughout most of his career and played more than sixty cinema roles. From an artistic but not theatrical background, Richardson had no thought of a stage career until a production of Hamlet in Brighton inspired him to become an actor. He learned his craft in the 1920s with a touring company and later the Birmingham Repertory Theatre. In 1931, he joined the Old Vic, playing mostly Shakespearean roles. He led the company the following season, succeeding Gielgud, who had taught him much about stage technique. After he left the company, a series of leading roles took him to stardom in the West End and on Broadway. In the 1940s, together with Olivier and John Burrell, Richardson was the co-director of the Old Vic company. There, his most celebrated roles included Peer Gynt and Falstaff. He and Olivier led the company to Europe and Broadway in 1945 and 1946, before their success provoked resentment among the governing board of the Old Vic, leading to their dismissal from the company in 1947. In the 1950s, in the West End and occasionally on tour, Richardson played in modern and classic works including The Heiress, Home at Seven, and Three Sisters. He continued on stage and in films until shortly before his sudden death at the age of eighty. He was celebrated in later years for his work with Peter Hall's National Theatre and his frequent stage partnership with Gielgud. He was not known for portraying the great tragic roles in the classics, preferring character parts in old and new plays. He was cast in leading roles in British and American films including Things to Come (1936), The Fallen Idol (1948), Long Day's Journey into Night (1962) and Doctor Zhivago (1965). He received nominations and awards in the UK, Europe, and the US for his stage and screen work from 1948 until his death. Richardson was twice nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, first for The Heiress (1949) and again (posthumously) for his final film, Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes (1984). Throughout his career, and increasingly in later years, Richardson was known for his eccentric behavior on and off stage. He was often seen as detached from conventional ways of looking at the world, and his acting was regularly described as poetic or magical.

Known variously as R.L., L.R., Ranz., and Lorenzo D. Richardson he was born in Benton County, Tennessee on 30 April in 1840 or 44. The earliest record found of him is the 1860 Federal Census of St. James township, Mississippi County, Missouri. At this time he was living with William A. SWEANEY and his wife Lewellen. The names of his parents and his relationship to the Sweaneys is not known at this time, family lore has it that he was orphaned.

Lorenzo traveled the 12 miles from St. James to New Madrid, Missouri, where Confederate forces had landed, along with six other young men from his county to join Cpt. Bankhead's Tennessee Flying Artillery on 31 July 1861. Two of the boys who joined that day were his close neighbors Andrew and Marion OLIVER, whose brother in law he would later become.

He was with the battery when it moved to Columbus, KY and is shown on the muster roll of 31 December 1861. He was almost certainly present during the fighting at New Madrid, MO in February-March 1862.

The family stories about Lorenzo state that he was wounded and this probably took place during the Shiloh campaign. On his Texas Confederate Pension Application he states "I was captured by the enemy at Corinth, Mississippi. As I now remember in 1863 (this would have to have been in 1862). I was in hospital there at the time of capture. Held by the enemy for many months, was turned out of prison at Alton, IL but never recovered."

L.R. Richardson along with Andrew OLIVER and many others are listed in the report ob absentees without leave from 1st Brigade, 1st Division, 1st Corps, Army of the Mississippi dated 24 June 1862.

Lorenzo's claim to have been captured while in hospital and to have eventually been sent to Alton, IL can not, at this time, be substantiated by U.S. government prisoner of war records. These records are incomplete and the record of his incarceration may have been lost.

In an affidavit for his pension, a prewar friend, James E. GULLION of Co. E, 1st Missouri Infantry Regiment states that he and Lorenzo were released in 1864 on the Mississippi River. They were reunited in Red River County, Texas sometime after the turn of the century.

Lorenzo's exact date of return to Mississippi County is uncertain. He made a claim for 4 months labor 1863-64 in William A. SWEANEY's probate record which would have put him back in the county about September 1863.

After his release he, and his friend James GULLION were inducted into the Enrolled Missouri Militia Co. H, 79th Regiment. This was mandatory service and they had no choice except to go back to prison or go into hiding. The E.M.M. was a state organization not recognized by the Federal government and not considered Federal service. It was non unlike the "minutemen" in that they remained at home until needed. They were called up in August 1864 for the emergency arising from General Sterling Price's raid into Missouri and relieved of duty 28 November 1864

For almost 20 years after the war Lorenzo continued to live in Mississippi County. He married Andrew OLIVER's sister Elizabeth on 18 February 1869. They had three children, Charlotte (Lottie)who would marry John S. HILL, James, and Lewellen Tennessee Voila (Dora) who would marry Robert S. WEDDLE.

The family removed to Red River County, Texas in 1883 and settled near Midway. The county tax records for the period show him for the first time in 1884 with virtually no property worth taxing. He continued to be quite poor in all the tax records that I have located. His grand-daughter Julia Weddle SZENASI claimed that he was addicted to opium as a result of his wound.

Elizabeth died 15 March 1894.

R.L. Richardson is listed as one of the founding members of United Confederate Veterans Camp #656 John C. Burks in Clarksville, TX. He received a pension from the state #32774.

Paap or Grandpaap, as he was known to his family, died of Brights Disease on 8 May 1918 while living with his daughter Lottie and her husband in Detroit, TX. He was buried in Bluff Cemetery near that town next to his wife, his son in law Robert S. WEDDLE was buried to his left in the 1920's.
I'm looking for any relations to William Marion Richardson and Rebecca Floyd. These were my great grandparents. My grandfather was Russell Richardson, born in Ballinger, Texas, and he married Irene Brown of Graysville, Ga. They had 8 children, of which my father was the seventh child, William Arthur Richardson. All I know of William Marion is that he is buried in an unmarked grave in Lyerly, Ga., having died about 1906. His daughter Ruth also died about this time. Rebecca lived to know her grandchildren, and died in Graysville, Ga in the 1930s or 1940s. I know William Marion had relatives in Texas, I believe some sisters who were institutionalized in Millegeville, Ga. Russell had one sister, Willie who survived and died about 1956 or 1957. I would very much like to know about my Richardson relatives and any
information is appreciated.
one day i went to see ayesha at work and she said akh[broter]have you read about alex haley in " reader's digest " ? i said no.she said he traced his family back to africa and they were muslims.ayesha said here take the book and read it and bring it back when you are finished.after reading alex haley's article on his roots back to africa i reflected on him teaming up with malcolm x on his autobiography.i then met amuslim from senegal who looked just like my grandmother's youngest brother.i then went to see my grandparents and ask them about their parents and where they came from.my grandfather h.j.roberson knew his parents and only his mother's mother belle williams who he said was referred to as the big house cook.then i asked my grandmother mary richardson about her family.my grandmother was an exception to the rule.she told me her parents were john richardson and everline oliver and were born in douglassville, texas in cass county and that she was born 4-23-1900 on o'neal's farm in atlanta, texas.her grandparents were miles richardson and fannie carey and her mother's parents were bonds[barnes]oliver and hagar campbell.i then asked her if she knew miles parents said she she could not remember.i said what about your mother's grandparents? she said andrew and becky campbell.i said where did they come from before coming to texas/ she said i do not know.alex haley's book " roots ' was being advertised for an upcoming mini series on abc-tv and then another article appeared in ' ebony " magazine and too me it was better than the one in " reader's digest " because it had photographs of alex haley with his family who descendended from kunta kinte who had been kidnapped and enslaved and brought to the thirteen colonies that would eventually be the united states of america.with al of the advertisement of roots for abc-tv i postponed going into the army.i began to read about genealogy and 3 years later i read " black genealogy ' by charles blcoson and he had listings of archive libraries and my grandparents said they came from texas so i wrote to the texas state archives.one day i asked my then wife saeeda what was this large envelope and she said it belongs to you.to me? she said yes.i was surprised because i had my mail sent to my post office box.i then opened the envelope and could not figure out what it was.large papers which appeared to be very old and gray.as i read it it then dawned on me these names miles richardson and then further down a little boy john richardson and i screamed these my roots.then another sheet as this was the 1880 census and then here was the 1900 census and john richardson and everline were listed and then charlie, jamie d.,andrew and a girl mary it was my grandmother allah'u'akbar! my grandmother said her father john richardson was a sharecropper for hardy o'neal.i then began to trace the o'neal's and found francis 'oneal who married ketturah richardson 12-28-1826 in wilkinson county, misissippi.a researcher wrote me and told me to write the texas state archives and get the 1867 voter registration records.i then wrote the texas state archives and received the 1867 voter registration records and found miles, julius and asbury richardson.i asked my grandmother had she heard of julius and asbury richardson and she said yes.miles said he came to texas from georgia to texas in 1856.what county in georgia did they come from? i am still trying to find out? my gradmother's father bonds [barnes]oliver said he came from africa as a boy to gal'weston [galveston],texas.i am still tryng to corroborate this oral tradition as my mother still say's she remebers her great grandfather teling them he came from africa as a boy.he died in 1937.i am trying to duplicate alex haley in tracing my family back to africa insha-allah.
