In 1861, he freed the serfs. He also gave much freedom to Finland, and expanded the Russian Army.
Unfortunately, his second marriage caused a grand rift in the royal family (he married a woman of "inferior rank" and there was fear that he would make her empress and raise the status of their children). On March 13, 1881, he was killed after returning from a military parade. His son (son from his first marriage), became Tsar Alexander III.
