MY GREAT GRANDFATHER: Born 1843 to David CROWLEY and Catherine MEGHAN in Kilbrittain, Ireland, emigrated on ship "southern cross" departed Plymouth England October 1867 and arriving January 1868, Melbourne Victoria. Also on the ship were a number of individual with the surname CROWLEY. Was a gold miner, farmer, labourer. In September 1873 married Catherine CAMERON, they had 7 children: David, James Duncan, Cornelius, Dennis KIA WW1, Johanna, Catherine Patricia, Flora. In 1887, 1889 and 1900 Catherine unsuccessfully filed for Divorce from James but each time the petition was thrown out of Court. James David CROWLEY died February 1900 in Corowa NSW Hospital from Haemoptysis and a clot of blood to the lung, had been sick for many years. Was buried the next day by undertake James Clayton and his two assistants. For many years no-on in the family knew where he was. According to Catherine he offered her 50 pounds to go away so he could bring another woman to live with him. A sad ending as the Death Certificate said he had no family, religion, never been married, it was just like nobody knew who he was. Today still no-one can find out anything about him. No records of his parents can be found and nobody seems to know who they are.
