Charles graduated from Holtville High School. An Associate in Fire Science was earned from Alexander City Junior College using his GI Bill.

Charles was a Southern Baptist, a deacon at Chisholm Baptist Church, and was the Church Training director one year. He especially enjoyed being a boys Sunday School teacher. He made sure his family was in church every time the doors were open.

US Air Force - Veteran Korean Conflict - Tulie, Greenland.

Charles spent 4 years in the US Air Force. He was stationed at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, TX and at Tulie, Greenland. He is a Veteran of the Korean Conflict. Later, he joined the Montgomery Fire Department working his way to Sargent and driving the Ladder Truck. He was an active participant in the Dale’s Penthouse fire and earned annual driving safety pins. After 20 years, he retired from MFD. He briefly worked at Montgomery Ward in stock control before becoming a Contract US Mail carrier to Tuskegee, AL.
