    Lieutenant Colonel Charlene Willa DuRant Franklin Lieutenant Charlene Franklin was born August 10, 1922 in Sumter SC. She began her nursing training at the Columbia Hospital of Richland County. She was an Affiliating student at the Good Samaritan- Waverly Hospital. She received her nursing degree on February 5, 1944. She entered the United States Army Nurse Corps, in 1944. She was licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Louisiana in May 20 ,1944. She was also licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of California on April 19,1950. She served as Medical Supervisor at Moncrief Army Hospital, Fort Jackson, SC. There she proved herself to be an exceptionally dedicated nurse, far exceeding the exacting standards of the United States Army Medical Department. She displayed a marked ability to foresee problems and initiate appropriate action to assure optimum patient care. She strongly advocated education and formal schooling for all levels of personnel, as well as informal teaching, attendance at workshops and enrolling in correspondence courses. Along with her most capable personnel, she conducted several coronary courses to assure quality care for patients. Lieutenant Colonel Franklin’s exemplary performance of duty reflects great credit upon herself, the Army Medical Department and the United States Army. She had a distinguished nursing career. She spent over 22 years of service in Military. She did tours of duty in Korea and Vietnam. Some of her many awards include: • Meritorious Service Medal - Presented by the President Nixon in 1969. • The Bronze Star Medal- April 15, 1970
