On a 386 Squadron hardstand at the south end of the field, Staff Sgt. Robert Garbarine
stood on the wing of his Thunderbolt, just beside the cockpit. Turning to look toward
the sound of gunfire, the startled crew chief noticed a hole appear in one of the
P-47's steel propeller blades. It was nearly the last thing Garbarine saw.
Another 20mm shell creased his skull, throwing him unconsous to the frozen ground.

his life
Robert (Gabby) Garbarine moved from Brooklyn to Asbury Park
as a young child. His family had a candy concession in the
Berkeley Carteret Hotel on the Boardwalk. He attended Holy
Spirit Elementary School, Asbury Park High School, Admiral
Farragut Academy and The Citadel. He served in the Army Air
Corps and earned many honors including the Purple Heart and
Bronze Star.

He was an avid sailor, a member of many sailing organizations
and clubs up and down the Eastern Seaboard. Gabby won many
trophies and awards over the years for his sailing expertise. He
was very active with the Performance Handicap Racing Fleet.
He had many careers in his lifetime the last being his own
company "The Marine Exchange" a marine surveying business.
