Glenn C. Hyder Aug. 21, 1925 - Jan. 10, 2012 Glenn Coolidge Hyder, 86, passed away early Tuesday morning. He and his wife, Evelyn, had recently moved to The Dalles to be close to family. Glenn was born in Lacomb at the home of his parents Freda (Ede) and Haynes Hyder. Glenn attended Lacomb School through the eighth grade. During the summers, he and his brother, Ray, would go with their mother to the berry and hop fields to earn money. His dad, Haynes, died when Glenn was only 8 years old. His mother later married John Johnsen, who grew up in Denmark. Glenn adored his stepdad. Glenn was drafted into the Army at age 18 and was sent to Shelby, Miss., for basic training, and then to fight in World War II, being stationed in France, Germany and Austria. In 1949, in a double wedding ceremony with his brother, Ray, and bride Charlene Williams, Glenn married Evelyn Anthony. Glenn and Evelyn made their home on a farm in Lacomb and Glenn went to work as a choker setter for Snow Peak Logging Co. When he wasn't logging, he was working on the farm. Later, he became a hook tender for Snow Peak. Having many stories to tell, he thoroughly enjoyed logging and was very fond of his fellow loggers. Glenn retired and sold their farm, and he and Evelyn moved to Lebanon in 1990. Glenn walked three miles each day, stopping to visit neighbors on the way. He was still quite ambitious and cleaned up around their rental house, even taking his "shindaiwa" weed eater to clean brush across the road, beside the railroad right-of-way. He was always quick to help anyone needing a hand. He loved the outdoors and went on backpacking trips to the mountains with his childhood friend, Stanley Sylvester. Glenn and Evelyn traveled for 10 years, visiting over 33 countries, including much of Europe. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn, of 62 years; son David Hyder of Sweet Home; daughter Nancy Hyder of The Dalles; and Nancy's daughters, Rebekah Hardin of The Dalles and Rachel Hardin of San Francisco. A viewing will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, at Huston-Jost Funeral Home. A private burial will be in Lacomb Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to The Boys & Girls Club in Lebanon or to Lacomb Cemetery.
