Introduction

Herb grew up in the Netherlands, in a family of fishermen. He emigrated to first Chicago, IL then Grand Rapis, MI and finally Sarasota, FL. He was an incredibly gifted amateur photographer who adored children and animals.He worked in a printing press back in the days when the presses were so huge, men had to climb around in them to line up the 4-color plates at which he was expert). H was a musician... primarily a trumpet player... who taught music for the Salvation Army for 50+ years. Herb and his beloved wife, Laurein Ridderhoff, had a son, David (who changed the spelling of the last name to an Americanized "Hoebake," served in WWII, married Audrey Jabotz and had two sons, Bruce and Bob) and a daughter, Jean Laurien, a fabulous musician who had five children and had much of her contemporary Christian music compositions published by Singspiration Publishing House. Her dies just a few weeks before his 100th birthday; he'd had fabulous health all hus life but after he fell and broke a hip he developed pneumonia while in the hospital and died.
