  • Introduction

    James Michael Letherer was born to John F. Letherer (1904 - 1974) and Ethel Rose Kenny (1907 - 1977). His father was born in Michigan and so was his mother. He had five siblings, including Patrice Ann, John R., Bernard F., and Robert Kenny Letherer. James Letherer married Janet S. Keeler in about 1960 in Hawaii. According to his memorial on Find A Grave, James was a one-legged amputee who joined the March on Selma, advocating for voting rights, and walked the entire 54 miles on crutches. He was on the cover of "Because They Marched". Jim had lost his leg to cancer and he also participated in a 1,500 mile run from Raleigh, North Carolina to San Diego, California, to promote cancer research.

    When he lived in Hawaii, James- age 27 - worked for the Hawaii Islanders of the Pacific Coast Baseball League. He started in baseball as a scoreboard keeper at the age of 13 in Saginaw Michigan and also served as clubhouse boy, office boy, and assistant manager. Later he was assistant general manager of the Reading, Clevalnd Indian farm team and served as ticket manager and promotion man for the Toronto International League.

    James, who was an amputee because of cancer in his leg, participated in marathons for good causes. James married Janet S. Keeler in about 1960 in Hawaii.

In 1933, in the year that James M Letherer was born, the day after being inaugurated, the new President, Franklin Roosevelt, declared a four-day bank holiday to stop people from withdrawing their money from shaky banks (the bank run). Within 5 days of his administration, the Emergency Banking Act was passed - reorganizing banks and closing insolvent ones. In his first 100 days, he asked Congress to repeal Prohibition (which they did), signed the Tennessee Valley Authority Act, signed legislation that paid commodity farmers to leave their fields fallow, thus ending surpluses and boosting prices, signed a bill that gave workers the right to unionize and bargain collectively for higher wages and better working conditions as well as suspending some antitrust laws and establishing a federally funded Public Works Administration, and won passage of 12 other major laws that helped the economy.

In 1940, when he was just 7 years old, on September 16th, the Selective Training and Service Act of 1940, was enacted - the first peacetime draft in U.S. history. Men between 21 and 36 were required to register with their draft boards. When World War II began, men between 18 and 45 were subject to service and men up to 65 were required to register.
