2 Memories, Stories & Photos about Jefferson

My dad used to tell us the story of the "Gnat in Me Eye." My dad's father was Charlie Blaylock, and his father was Jefferson Davis Blaylock, who was a Southern Baptist preacher. Once when Jefferson Davis had gone away from home for several days he left my grandpa Charlie some chores to do, but Charlie did not do them. (Charlie was a very young boy at this time.) When Jefferson Davis returned from his trip he sat Charlie down and asked him if he had done his chores (knowing full well he hadn't). Charlie knew he would get in trouble if he admitted he hadn't done his chores, but he also knew it would be a sin to lie to his father. Not knowing which was worse, he instead suddenly grabbed his eye with his hands and started screaming "I have a gnat in me eye! I have a gnat in me eye!" and ran away. This became a family joke and whenever someone wanted to avoid something they would claim that they had a "gnat in me eye!"
